Woodstock Valley, CT
20 Acres
As an outright donation in October 2009 by Mrs. Jeanne Kenyon DeBell and family, this beautifully forested land named Kenyon Woods was once part of the productive Joseph Kenyon family homestead. This area was a bustling village of the 1800’s, and Mrs. DeBell’s family history began with Joseph’s purchase of Valley Worsted Mill in 1843.
Protected and cared for by Jeanne and her family for nearly 170 years, Kenyon Woods is part of what remains of their original holdings. Passing Kenyon Woods to our Land Trust ensures its protection and enjoyment to future generations.
Jeanne’s generosity extended further when she requested we continue her practice of selective harvesting. This will allow Kenyon Woods to be self sustaining and pay for its stewardship. The Woods are open to the public for passive recreation.
Kenyon Woods is also in an area of other protected lands both privately and publicly owned, such as Camp Keemosahbee (Nahaco {Nathan Hale Council of Boy Scouts}) and land protected by Connecticut Forest and Parks. Of the Camp, Jeanne recalls how from her not so distant past “the soft strain of evening “Taps” still grips her memory”.
With a slope toward Crystal Pond, protection of the Pond and the Willimantic Watershed is strengthened.
